The first German-French Silbermann Organ Days were attended by a large specialist audience and numerous organ enthusiasts from October 2 to 5, 2024. Two study days in Königsfeld and Villingen in the Black Forest and an “Organ Day Strasbourg” provided expert information about the organ, historically oriented organ playing, the Silbermann family, 5 concerts and, again and again, encounters with Albert Schweitzer.
The “Silbermann Organ Days” began with an evening tour, reading and discussion in the Albert Schweitzer House in Königsfeld.
The next two days were entitled “Organ building and organ playing in dialog”. In the morning, keynote speeches by:
Rainer Noll (organist and musicologist), Albert Schweitzer, the organ and Silbermann Kristian Wegscheider (master organ builder, Dresden) Tunings
Prof. Dr. Michael Kaufmann (organologist, Heidelberg) The Silbermann family and the organ wind
Jean Christian Guerrier and Marianne Bucher (master organ builders in Alsace) Restoration principles
Christian Lutz (organologist in France) Silbermann in Alsace Albert Drescher (photographer)
Work on the instrument with Olivier Wyrwas and Jan Katzschke in the afternoon and public dialog concerts in Königsfeld and Villingen in the evening.
Representatives of the two Silbermann associations were:
Monique Leimbach, French-Alsatian association and Dr. Juliane Schwarz-Bierschenk, German association.
An organ seminar on the Johann-Andreas Silbermann organ in Villingen on the subject of “How to play a historical organ” with lively, hand-scooped wind with students from the universities of Stuttgart, Rottenburg and Heidelberg rounded off the interesting study program.
The crowning finale was an “Organ Day Strasbourg” with Daniel Maurer on the Silbermann organs of St. Aurelie, St. Thomas, St. Pierre-le-Jeune and St. Madeleine;
here too, encounters with Albert Schweitzer were at every turn.
Conclusion: an organ conference with a breath of fresh air in the Franco-German Silbermann fraternity, great encounters, inspiration and wonderful concerts, which were experienced by numerous visitors.
