"The main organ, miraculously, has been saved" reported  Vincent Dubois to journalist Suzanne Gervais on the morning after the fire in Notre Dame, Paris 16.4.19.

Paris awoke this morning in shock at the fire which destroyed Notre Dame. The emotions of the musicians are especially raw, specifically among the three organists, worried about the condition of the Great Cavaille-Coll organ, whose restauration dates from 2014. The joint titulaire of the Great Organ in the loft, together with Oliver Latry and Philippe Lefebvre, Vincent Dubois were on watch all night.

Contrary to the rumours circulating this morning, it is thought that the Great Organ has been saved. To the right and left of it are a few puddles of water, but nothing dramatic. The organ screen is intact, plus all the pipes. A miracle! My colleagues Oliver Latry and Philippe Lefebvre and I were in contact all night. We had given up hope.

It was the big stone slab connecting the two towers which saved the organ, as at this location there are no roof beams, and the water used by the fire-brigade flowed down to the right and left of it, so not into the organ loft

However, if the ceiling vault and the supporting pillars, which are badly damaged, are not supported quickly, the organ will have to be dismantled and a workshop found big enough to take into safety. There is no such place in the environs of Paris.

What we need to know, and very quickly, is whether the vital supporting pillars of the vaulted ceiling will be able to withstand the weight of the water and the liquified lead which has flowed over it.

The Choir Organ has also not been burnt but was totally exposed to the water. We'll have to wait to see what is left of it. It will be years before the instrument is playable again, but the main thing is that it has not been reduced to ashes. We shall just have to be patient and do what we can to enable a restauration, after it has been thoroughly examined.

Vincent Dubois : "Le grand orgue de Notre-Dame de Paris est un miraculé"

Paris se réveille abasourdi par l’incendie qui a ravagé Notre-Dame. L’émotion est grande chez les musiciens, et notamment parmi les organistes, inquiets quant à l’état du grand orgue Cavaillé-Coll, dont la dernière restauration remonte à 2014. Cotitulaire de la tribune de la cathédrale avec Olivier Latry et Philippe Lefebvre, Vincent Dubois a passé une nuit blanche.

«Contrairement aux rumeurs qui ont circulé tôt ce matin, le grand orgue est, a priori, sauvé. Il a quelques flaques d’eau à gauche et à droite, mais rien de dramatique. Le buffet serait intact, ainsi que la tuyauterie. C’est miraculeux. Nous étions en contact toute la nuit avec mes collègues Olivier Latry et Philippe Lefebvre et nous n’y croyions plus. C’est la dalle de pierre qui relie les deux tours qui a sauvé l’instrument: il n’y a pas de charpente à cet endroit-là du toit: l’eau envoyée par les pompiers a donc coulé de part et d’autre et n’est pas tombée sur la tribune de l’orgue.

En revanche, si les voûtes et leurs clés de la nef, très fragilisées, ne sont pas rapidement consolidées, il faudra démonter l’orgue et trouver un atelier assez grand pour le mettre à l’abri. Il n’en existe pas de tel en région parisienne. Tout l’enjeu est de savoir, très vite, si les clés de voûte vont résister au poids de l’eau et du plomb fondu qui s’y est déversé. L’orgue de chœur n’a pas brûlé non plus, mais il a, en revanche, totalement pris l’eau. Il faudra voir ce qu’il en reste… Il faudra attendre des années avant de pouvoir rejouer cet instrument, mais l’essentiel était qu’il ne finisse pas en cendres. Nous prendrons mal en patience et nous nous mobiliserons pour sa remise en état, une fois qu’il aura pu être examiné de près. »
